Avoid Seasonal Pounds and Keep Your Mood Healthy This Winter

Dr. Karen French, D.C.
By Dr. Karen French
Chiropractic Physician
Yes it's that most wonderful time of the year again.

And along with that comes Holiday stress and extra pounds.  If you are like many of my patients, you can probably relate with the change of season lifestyle groove.

In the colder months, our activity levels diminish because we spend more time indoors.  We do not pay as close attention to our food intake and the holidays certainly do not help.  We also increase our intake of comfort foods in the winter, which is mainly high in carbohydrates which leads to high blood sugar levels and, subsequently, weight gain and mood changes.

The average American will gain 1-3 pounds a year.  Most of that weight is gained during the winter months.  Some factors that attribute to increased weight gain are decreased activity levels, cold weather, hectic schedules, poor eating habits, decreased water intake and high stress.

These are important factors to pay attention to because they all can lead to obesity.  Obesity will increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes and weaken the immune system.

Following these guidelines can help keep your mood healthy, your activity level up, and your weight down:
  • Find a winter activity that replaces your summer activity.
  • Eat foods that have a low glycemic index (low fat yogurt, brown rice, vegetables, whole wheat, legumes, oatmeal, etc.)  These foods digest slower which helps reduce appetite as well as decrease blood sugar levels.  An increase in blood sugar levels will raise insulin level which will increase fat, especially around the stomach.  In addition, unbalanced blood sugar levels play a part in moodiness and depression.
  • Eat smaller meals throughout the day and do not skip meals.
  • Increase fiber intake.
  • Drink at least 6 glasses of water a day.
  • Avoid stress.  Higher stress levels increase a hormone called cortisol which increases stored fat in the midsection.
  • Add supplements to help you maintain blood sugar levels and promote fat loss.  White Kidney Bean Extract is the perfect supplement to help with this.
